God bless the Mothership Hendrix and all who sail with it.

Admiral Fell Promises

New Sun Kil Moon album. More of a Kozelek solo album, it’s just him and a guitar. It’s a tad languid but has some good songwriting and guitar playing.

Spell – Seasons in the Sun (1993)

A very fun album by Boyd Rice (NON) and Rose McDowall (Strawberry Switchblade/Coil/Current 93). This is unlike anything else I’ve heard by Boyd Rice, and even features him singing instead of just doing his usual spoken-word performances (but there are spoken-word pieces here, too). It’s a rather kitsch collection of cover versions of songs from the 1960s and 1970s; the design of the album cover might give you some idea of the aesthetic they are aiming at here, and they pull it off pretty well.

If you like 1960s pop songs, you’ll probably like this too.

Lisa Germano – Geek the Girl

Geek the Girl

Year: 1994
1. My Secret Reason
2. Trouble
3. Geek the Girl
4. Just Geek
5. Cry Wolf
6. …A Psychopath
7. Sexy Little Girl Princess
8. Phantom Love
9. Cancer of Everything
10. A Guy Like You
11. …of Love and Colors
12. Stars

One of my favorite albums ever. Geek the Girl is the emotional portrait of a young girl coming of age told through perfectly written rock songs. It’s a powerful and atmospheric menage a trois between the Germano’s violin, guitar textures, and ironic but impacting lyrics. Listen to it at least twice before you dismiss this one. No one likes Lisa Germano on the first round (except maybe YOU, but I doubt it).

Roy Harper – Stormcock

Not enough people listen to Roy harper, hopefully this post will help remedy  this travesty. The picture above is from the front cover of Roy’s 1971 album, Stormcock, (yes I know the name sucks, get over it asshole) which is almost universally agreed to be his magnum opus. By this point in his career, Mr. Harper had pretty much abandoned the conventional folk songs seen on his previous albums for more progressive mostly  7min+ tracks. Everyones favourite guitarist, Jimmy Page of Lead Zepplin plays lead guitar on the second track ‘The Same Old Rock’ which starts as a folk ballad  before evolving into an acoustic jam session with flamenco influenced solos provided by Page. The album also contains some of his more refined lyrics, in fact in the song ‘Hors d’oeuvres’ he uses a ‘bra’ and ‘saggy tits’ as imagery. If that last sentence hasn’t inspired you to listen to this album then I don’t know what will.

Bitches don’t know bout my Roy Harper

William Parker – Double Sunrise Over Neptune

Moar jazz! but it ain’t your average bebop album. Double Sunrise Over Neptune is an album by William Parker who is highly regarded for his work in the realm of free jazz. Recorded live (I didn’t know it was a live album when I first heard it, the recording is pretty imaculate) at the 2007 Vision Festival, the 16 piece ensemble brings together a variety of instrumentation, from traditional jazz set-pieces like the trumpet or sax, to  the oud , cello and guitar. The rhythms are often distinctly non-Jazz-like and the vocals consist of semi-scat (sometimes I swear it’s just gibberish) chanting mantras. All this vast instrumentation melds together perfectly where no one instrument gets more attention than it deserves, creating a kind of harmonious masturbation, which at times makes Sun Ra and Cecil Taylor sound boring. Get it while it’s hot, bitches.

Tosca Tango Orchestra

Animated Version. . .
Waking Life
Or irl
irl

I found Tosca Tango Orchestra through a Richard Linklater film entitled Waking Life. The soundtrack was mind-bogglingly great, so I looked that shit up, and 2 years later I can still listen to the soundtrack a good 5 times in a row and not get sick of it. Glover Gill on the Accordion leads a group of women on strings and piano. Check it.

While looking for a link to get you guys, I actually found another album of theirs I was unaware even existed. Needless to say I am pretty damn excited about this, and by the time I post this I will most likely have only listened to a few tracks on it. So yeah, check these out.

La Furia Del Tango

Coil – Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil (2000)

Thighpaulsandra, Coil's Welsh synthesizer demon.

This album is amazing, and increases in intensity as it goes on. If you’ve only heard early albums like Horse Rotorvator and Love’s Secret Domain, you need to get this to find out what Coil were really about.

It was released during what John Balance referred to as their “moon musick” period, and it is one of the first albums to feature Thighpaulsandra as a permanent member of the band (he was a full-time member from 1999 through to the death of John Balance in 2004). His presence is impossible to miss, and it is clear that his extensive collection of analogue synthesizers had a huge impact on the band’s sound. This thing is full of distorted analogue synth drones, and lots of stereo attacks from squelchy modulating synths. The 27-minute closing-track ‘Tunnel of Goats’ can be overwhelming if your speakers are loud enough. So play it loud! THIS is what electronic music should sound like.

If you like it, try out Time Machines next. That album has a similar approach, but it is much less intense and a bit more hallucinatory.
